Pauliceia 2.0: an Open Science Initiative Seeking to Deeply Map the History of São Paulo.

Pauliceia 2.0 is a collaborative mapping project of the history of São Paulo, dedicated to the historical period of its emergence as a modern industrial metropolis (1870-1940). Launched in 2018, the platform has been continuously developed, tested, re-discussed and improved. In this sense, its goal is to be an open science experiment, not only because it is a platform open to collaboration from anyone interested in feeding data layers, but also because it values ??user perceptions to improve the functioning and design of the tool. The platform has been used mainly by researchers, professors and university students. The third phase of the project, which began in November 2024, aims to expand beyond this given ecosystem to community groups and collectives that have their own community collections. The goal is to enrich the city’s history with their knowledge and perspectives, diversifying and problematizing the official and academic cartographic discourse. This is supported by the partnership established with the Municipal Historical Archive of São Paulo, which holds a valuable documentary collection of the city’s history and coordinates a network of community collection groups. Its role as an intermediary between the project team and these community groups is and will be essential to the success of the project’s objectives. On the other hand, the project team’s participation in the NEH Community Deep Mapping Institute has been decisive in training the team in deep mapping, including through the rich dialogue with the other groups participating in the course. The presentation in question aims to discuss the opportunities and challenges posed by the objectives of the third phase of the project. The project also has a partnership with the Aeronautics Technological Institute and Emory University, and is funded by CNPq and Fapesp.
