Emergent History: When AI Models Rewrite the Past

The call for papers (CFP) suggests scholars of the past can apply AI to “modeling emergent phenomenon.” This paper flips the script and considers the emergent phenomenon of AI models. The CFP describes these models as “tools” that we can “use.” And yet these models can have conversations with scholars about their research of the past. This paper will explore several reasons for these kinds of gaps between rhetoric and reality when it comes to AI models and scholars of the past.
